Alma May Hughes, 98, of Shelbyville, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Ashford Place Health Campus. Born July 29, 1906, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of the late William Albert and Laura Anna (Ropp) Mount. She married Fred Hughes on July 20, 1932, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Donald (wife, Margaret) Hughes and Wayne (wife, Bertha) Hughes, both of Shelbyville; one daughter, Peggy Sue Forrest of Shelbyville; one daughter-in-law, Dottie Hughes of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren, Diana Powell, Robbin Hughes, Jenny Burton, Teresa Whitis, Lou Ann Greene, Sherri Pavlatos, Shawn Hughes, Carol Guffey and Ron Forrest; one granddaughter-in-law, Senda Sue Forrest; 18 great-grandchildren, Zachery Powell, Anthony Pavlatos, Shelby Hughes, Christina Guffey, Ron Guffey, Kimberly Gilles, Joshua Whitis, Heather Forrest, Chris Greene, Alanna Powell Altic, Nicole Pavlatos, Ian Hughes, Kyle Burton, Billy Guffey, Amy Turner, Jeremy Whitis, Michael Forrest, Jason Greene; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one son, Harold Hughes; one son-in-law, Robert G. Forrest; and two grandchildren, Robert Lee "Bob" Forrest and Susan Hughes. Mrs. Hughes was a lifelong Shelby County resident, living in Las Vegas from 1985 to 1993. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hughes attended Flat Rock grade school and graduated from Columbus High School. She was a member of Flat Rock Christian Church and former member of Flat Rock Citizens Committee. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at noon Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. George Plantz officiating. Interment will be in Flat Rock Cemetery, in Shelby County. Memorial contributions may be made to Flat Rock Christian Church, Post Office Box 36, Flat Rock, IN 47234.
