Clayton J. Smith

Clayton J. "Smitty" Smith, 87, of Shelbyville, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South, in Greenwood. Born April 5, 1917, in Shelbyville, he was the son of the late Gary and Mary (Hoover) Smith. He married V. Eileen Moberly on Dec. 24, 1938, and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Sandra Jean (husband, Donald) Richards Sr. of Shelbyville; one son, Larry C. (wife, Maude L.) Smith of Boggstown; one sister, Lillie Mae Travis of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren, Claytanna Pirtle, Larry Clayton Jr., Jeffrey Lee Smith, Donald Gene Richards Jr. and Crystal Dawn Robinson; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Mr. Smith was a Shelbyville resident for most of his life, living in Indianapolis in the late 1950s to mid-1970s. He owned Smitty's Furniture Store, in Fountain Square, during the time they lived in Indianapolis. He then worked at K.T. Corp. and part time at Fairland Rec for 30 years. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and also served in the Indiana National Guard. He attended Shelbyville High School. Mr. Smith was a member of Eagles Lodge. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St. Private graveside services will be Thursday in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Indiana, 9410 Priority Way West Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
