Eula Irene "E.I." Smith

Eula Irene “E.I.” Smith, 78, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021, at IU Hospital North in Carmel. She was born June 2, 1942, in Shelbyville, the daughter of A. Carl and Mary Elizabeth (Hodson) Bowlby. On January 7, 1962, she married Harry Earl Smith, and he preceded her in death on January 6, 2017. E.I. is survived by her daughter, Trudy Ann Smith, of Indianapolis; brother, Charles E. Bowlby and wife, Dorothy, of Waldron; sister, Mary Helen Buckley of Noblesville; son-in-law, Larry Rosen of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to Harry, E.I. was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Deborah Irene Rosen; and brother-in-law, Dan Buckley. E.I. graduated in 1960 from Shelbyville High School. She was formerly the bookkeeper for Vaught Oil for 21 years, retiring in 2005. E.I. and Harry formerly owned and operated Smith’s Amoco in Shelbyville from 1969 to 1983. E.I. was formerly a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 1307 in Rushville, and served as secretary to the Shelbyville Lodge No. 457 for one year. She enjoyed growing beautiful orchids and researching family genealogy. E.I. loved to care for her family. She resided at Wellbrooke of Carmel for the past four years, joining their circle of family, friends and support. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Cliff Bunch officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines requiring a mask and social distancing will be observed. There will be a limit of 25 people allowed inside the funeral home at a time. Family and friends are invited to view the service via livestreaming on our facebook page www.facebook.com/freemanffh. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave, Chicago, IL 60614-2256 or Indiana Elks Cancer Fund, in care of Noblesville Elks Lodge, PO Box 306, Noblesville, IN 46060.
