Gary Douglas Powell

Gary Douglas Powell, 74, of Shelbyville went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville. He was born July 30, 1945, in Carthage, Missouri, the son of Jack Gary and Jayne (Burt) Powell. On December 30, 1967, he married his wife of 52 years, Rebecca Brown, and she survives. In addition to Rebecca, Gary is survived by his daughters, Tricia Ringer and husband, Chad, of Trafalgar, and Shawna Ballard and husband, Dustin, of New Palestine; son, Josh Powell of Shelbyville; brothers, Dr. Rodger Powell and wife, Katie, of Keystone Heights, Florida, and Jack Powell and wife, Charlotte, of Lake City, Florida; sister, Sherri Keys and husband, Ed, of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Cole, Cameron and Christian Powell, Caden, Carson and Lydia Ringer, and Landon and Addison Rae Ballard; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gary graduated in 1963 from Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, and in 1967 from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Because of Gary’s love of the Lord, in 1991 he entered Boyce Bible College, a division of Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and became an ordained minister. He was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. Gary and his father owned and operated a funeral home in St. Petersburg. He was also a funeral director in the Shelbyville and Indianapolis area, including Carmony-Ewing Funeral Homes. Later, he became the minister of Union Baptist church in Greensburg for five years. Gary loved his work and had a giving heart, always helping other people. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, he was a Past Exalted Ruler at the St. Petersburg lodge. Gary enjoyed swimming, diving, motorcycle and horseback riding and a good joke. He loved chocolate, as well as his family, friends and animals. Funeral services will be private at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Robb Barlow officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Shelby County.
