Gene Paul Springer

November 13, 1934 — September 19, 2021

Gene Paul Springer, 86, of McCordsville, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. He was a good, strong man who loved his family, his community, and never shied away from hard work or anything that needed to be fixed. He was born November 13, 1934, in the family home in Gwynneville to Jesse Cleveland and Elsie Evelyn (Andrews) Springer. Gene graduated from Morristown High School in 1952. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1957 to 1959. On August 8, 1964, he married his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise Krick, and she survives. Gene transformed the upstairs of his childhood home into a small cozy apartment for him and his bride. They purchased land in western Hancock County, built a home, and moved into it in 1967. His family home was of great pride for him, and only his second residence his entire life. Gene was an active member of Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church, where he served the church in various capacities including chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. He was the supervising quality inspector for all construction projects at Ft. Benjamin Harrison until retiring in 1990. After his retirement, he worked a combined 24 years for R.W. Armstrong, then RQAW. Gene liked to keep busy. He was an entrepreneur and refurbished typewriters and adding machines, as well as made fishing lures for extra income. Gene was actively serving on the Buck Creek Township Advisory Board in his 14th year. He was a 50-year member of the Sugar Creek Lodge No. 279 F&AM. Gene and Mary loved to travel and RV camp. They owned an RV for 35 years and the last 10 of those they served as Wagonmasters leading groups of fellow RVers to some of the most scenic areas of the U.S. This included extensive driving trips to Maine, the Southwest, and two trips to Alaska. Mary and Gene spent their winters in Seminole, Florida, for the past 24 years. He loved the warm Florida sun and continually persuaded Mary to leave earlier each winter and stay longer each spring. He was outgoing, loved people, and never met a stranger. The pride of Gene's life was his family. God blessed Mary and Gene with three children. David Springer (Angela) of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and their children Ella and Paul. Debbie Nieter (Roger) of Livonia, Michigan, and their children Hope, Marissa, Holly, and Brock. Deanna Keene (Scott Akers) of McCordsville, and her children Derrick Keene, Danielle Keene, Nicholas Keene, and Aaron Akers. He enjoyed a close relationship with his only sibling, William Edward "Bill" Springer, who precedes him in death. Surviving in-laws are Eleanora Jean "Norie" Springer of Indianapolis, Ruth (Krick) Lamar of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Bill Krick (Dianna) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to noon on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Mount Comfort United Methodist Church, 3179 N 600 W, Greenfield. The funeral service will follow the visitation starting at noon on Saturday at the church with Pastor David Galbraith officiating. The family requests masks be worn during the visitation and funeral service. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown. Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 124 E. North St., in Morristown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buck Creek Township Fire Dept. Auxiliary.
