Janet Ann Thomas, 82, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

She was born April 13, 1940, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Kenneth R. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Cossairt) Thomas.

Janet is survived by her brother, Michael S. Thomas and wife, Kathy (Coffey), of Shelbyville; nieces, Lucinda L. Best and husband, Jason, of Columbus, and Sarah E. Thomas of Indianapolis; nephew, Charles F. Thomas and wife, Christy (Higdon), of Shelbyville; great-nephew, Steven R. Trowbridge, and companion, Zach Gafanhoe of Boston, Massachusetts; great-nieces, Elizabeth “Liz” J. Trowbridge and partner, Mykhael Ortiz, of Columbus, Ava M. Thomas of Shelbyville, and Jade Best of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Frederick C. Thomas.

Janet graduated in 1958 from Shelbyville High School, and Ball State University in 1962.  She received her Masters degree from Indiana University.

She began her career as a teacher at Milroy School.  Janet retired from Iroquois School in Des Plaines, Illinois, where she was a teacher and guidance counselor, in 1995. 

Janet was formerly a member of Alpha Omicron Pi at Ball State and the Illinois Teacher’s Union.

She enjoyed golfing and international travels.

Janet’s family would like to thank, Charlene Stephens, for her years of caregiving to Jan and the compassionate and caring staff at Walker Place.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with Pastor Charles Jordan officiating.

A Celebration of Janet’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Blessings Opera House, 30 E. Washington St. in Shelbyville, please take the elevator to the second floor.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
