Joan Davis Coffey, 89, of Shelbyville, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Morristown Manor in Morristown.
She was born on March 10, 1937, in Columbus, the daughter of Donald and Lorene (Boyd) Graham. On September 19, 1953, she married Vernon O. Davis, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1984. In 1987, Joan married Buell Coffey, who preceded her in death in 1998.
Joan carried a deep and enduring love for her late husband, Vernon. Even near the end of her life, while on her deathbed, she sang “Oh Me, Oh My” by Lulu, a song that reminded her of him. Her love for Vernon remained a treasured part of her heart throughout her life, even after his passing and despite the years that followed.
Joan is survived by her Daughter and son inlaw Beth & Charlie Ayers. Grandchildren, Nicholas Davis, Brittany Davis Brummett, Cory Lazzell, Ashley Lazzell, and Michael Davis; and her great-grandchildren, Nolan, Zakkary, Amelia, and Norah.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Steven Davis and Tony Davis; and her sister, Donna Graham.
In 1955, Joan graduated from Columbus High School.
She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.
Joan formerly worked as the cafeteria manager at St. Joe Catholic School Shelbyville Central Schools for more than 20 years. She also spent time caring for the elderly, offering her time and compassion to those who needed it most.
Her tender heart sought out opportunities to love, care for, and provide hospitality to others, especially the vulnerable. This kindness was a reflection of the gentle and delicate spirit she carried throughout her life.
Joan enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and going for walks. She also had a particular fondness for the color blue and for birds, especially hummingbirds.
Whenever you see a hummingbird, think of Joan. Let it be a reminder of her, guiding you through the sapphire-blue river of life and encouraging you to tread lightly, seek knowledge, and find beauty throughout every experience.
Joan was a remarkable woman. Her life, and all the wonderful things she did for the people around her, can teach us lessons in patience, kindness, and care. She gave so much love to those around her, and I believe she carried that love with her wherever she may be—whether in Heaven, Asphodel, as a wandering spirit, or as a hummingbird.
She will be dearly missed, but the love and beauty she brought into the lives of others will remain.
Graveside services will be held at Bennett Cemetery, with Gwen Durkee officiating.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
