JoAnn Muncy

JoAnn Muncy, 88, a longtime resident of Shelbyville, passed away on August 2, 2026. Born in Jeffersonville on December 13, 1937, she was the youngest of ten children born to the late Flavil and Alice (Ryder) Smith. After graduating from Jeffersonville High School, she married Carl V. Muncy, Sr. on August 9, 1957. The couple shared 55 wonderful years of marriage and a beautiful life together until Carl's passing on June 26, 2013.

JoAnn was a familiar and beloved face in the local school community, dedicating 30 years of service as the secretary for the Shelbyville High School Cafeteria and secretary to the Food Service Director. She truly loved interacting with the high school students every day and was a fiercely proud fan of the Shelbyville Golden Bears. For decades, she and Carl were fixtures at school sporting events, especially Friday night basketball games. Deeply rooted in her community, JoAnn was a former member of the Town & Country Christian Church and successfully co-owned the Something Extra Dress Shop for several years.

For JoAnn, family always came first. She was an exceptionally social person who cherished time spent with friends, playing Bingo, and gathering with her Card Club. She was her family's biggest cheerleader, never missing an opportunity to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. JoAnn also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including occasional trips to the casino to play the penny slots and any chance to go out to eat. Breakfast at Compton’s Cow Palace or dinner with family and friends at favorites like Red Lobster and Olive Garden always brought her joy. She held a deep affection for her dogs, especially Molly, Candi, and Sammy, and she was famously particular about her sweet treats—always ordering a chocolate malt, never a milkshake.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Carl; her son, Carl V. “Bub” Muncy, Jr.; her five brothers, Kenneth, Alfred, Frank, Clyde, and Gilbert Smith; and her four sisters, Mable Branham, Norma Snelling, Marian Mathis, and Dorcas Hatfield.

She leaves behind a rich legacy of love and laughter. She is survived by her three daughters, Vicki Robertson, Pam (Mark) Branson, and Paula (Phil) Henry; her seven grandchildren, Amy Luther, Andrew Luther, Kylie (Kaleb) Kerans, Krista (Justin) Green, Eli (Amadeus Wagner) Branson, Austin (Kristina) Coffey, and Corbin (Liz) Coffey; as well as 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren who will miss her dearly.

The Funeral Service will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, August 7, 2026, in the Freeman Family Funeral Home - Shelbyville Chapel, 819 South Harrison Street, Shelbyville, with calling there from 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Whispering Hope Memorial Gardens.
