Joe A. Shurig

Joe A. Shurig, 77, of Plainfield, formerly of Shelby County, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at his home.

He was born March 22, 1945, in Princeton, the son of Darwin and Edith (Smith) Shurig.  On February 15, 1967, he married his wife of 55 years, Carol Meyer, and she survives.

In addition to Carol, Joe is survived by his daughter, Susan Mary Shurig of Sahuarita, Arizona; son, Darwin Jay Shurig and wife, Jamie, of Plainfield; brother, John Lewis Shurig and wife, Rose, of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Blakeley Shurig, Cameron Shurig and Lakin Shurig.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joe graduated in 1963 from Oakland City High School.  He received his Master’s degree in education from Ball State University in 1974, and an Associate’s degree in Health Care Administration from Lockyear Business College.

He was a member of Acton Methodist Church in Indiana, and the Santa Cruz Valley United Methodist Church in Arizona.

Joe began his career in teaching in Evansville, and then taught science for 35 years at Waldron High School.  He also worked in health care at the cardiac lab at Community South Hospital, for 13 years.

He enjoyed playing water volleyball and bocce ball. Joe also enjoyed playing cards and reading.

A gathering of friends will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

The Celebration of Joe’s life will follow at 2:30 pm Saturday, at the funeral home, with Chaplain Kevin Williams and his son, Darwin Shurig officiating.  livestreaming will begin at 2:25 p.m. on our facebook page www.facebook.com/freemanffh.

Inurnment will be at Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County.
