John Alvin Asher, 81, of Fairland, passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at Greenfield Healthcare Center in Greenfield.
He was born November 10, 1936, in Sandborn, the son of John Henry and Mary (Newkirk) Asher. On August 15, 1988, he married Linda Sue Kolter, and she survives.
In addition to Linda, John is survived by his sons, John H. Asher of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joseph L. Asher and wife, Gloria, of Greer, South Carolina, Jim Asher and wife, Angela, of Indianapolis, and Jerry Asher and wife, Robin, of Kokomo; daughters, Jennifer Chastain and husband, Bryan, of Manilla, and Diana Madden and husband, James, of Laurel; sisters, Sharon Compton and husband, Lewis, of Florida, Mary Louise Wright of Illinois, and Elizabeth Thompson and husband, Joe, of Linton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey W. Asher; and brothers, Haskell Asher and Keith Asher.
John graduated from Sandborn High School in 1954. He continued his education while serving in the U.S. Navy, receiving numerous certifications in electrical engineering on submarines.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1956 to 1966, during the Vietnam War.
John was formerly a mechanic on heavy equipment at Beatty Construction and Coffee Construction.
He enjoyed racing stock, mods and sprint cars.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be at Flat Rock Cemetery.
