Joy Janet Lovitt, 80, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at her residence.
She was born February 1, 1940, in Shelby County, the daughter of Lloyd and Regina (Valentine) Thurston. On September 26, 1958, she married Kenneth Aaron Lovitt, and he preceded her in death on January 9, 2011.
Joy is survived by her son, Robin Lovitt of Shelbyville; daughters, Beth Crouch and husband, Tim, of Shelbyville, and Christine Lovitt, of Flat Rock; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; companion, J.D. Waldroupe of North Carolina; and lots of friends.
In addition to Kenneth, Joy was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Murrita Louise “Rita” Montgomery and Romona “Mona” Hodges.
Joy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She was also a member of Shelby Senior Services, Dad’s Night In Home Economics Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles and a garden club.
While volunteering at Shelby Senior Services, Joy founded the Senior Centers Red Hat Society, enjoyed organizing trips and cooked many meals.
Joy also enjoyed playing Mahjong, darts, cards, dominoes and board games.
A gathering of friends will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2020 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
A Celebration of Joy’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with The Reverends Beth Crouch and Bill Horner officiating.
