Kathryn E. (Runnebohm) Marshall, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 in her Shelbyville, IN home of over 60 years. She was born on February 2, 1929 in Waldron, IN to Edward and Matilda (Miller) Runnebohm, one of seven siblings.
Kathryn married her high school sweetheart, Richard Marshall, on July 16, 1950. They built their home in sight of both the St. Vincent’s church steeple and her parent’s home. Kathryn worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator from 1947 until 1956, leaving with the birth of the first of their three daughters. Afterwards, Kathryn worked for many years in an administrative capacity for Richard’s business, Marshall Trucking.
Kathryn was a tireless helpmate and host to all who were lucky to know her. Her life centered around her Catholic faith and her family. Over the years, her home saw countless happy gatherings as Richard and Kathryn opened their home and pool to neighbors, friends, and countless nieces and nephews. Family and non-family alike called her “Aunt Kathryn.” All present grew accustomed to her fretting over her “bad” pies and cooking as she stubbornly refused to eat until all were fed.
In her later years, Kathryn loved being “Grams” to her seven grandchildren. Christmas celebrations and summers at the pool were much-anticipated and well-attended reunions. Much like her solid and steady brick home on busy East Michigan Road, however, Kathryn preferred to be somewhat adjacent to the action. What she really cherished was working in her flower beds, praying the rosary in her chair by the window, and watching the birds with Richard. Kathryn was a devout and faithful Catholic, attending daily Mass at St. Vincent’s, washing purificators, hosting Fr. Paul Landwerlen, and steadfastly offering prayers for her loved ones throughout her life.
She spent her last hours in view of the birds outside her living room window, offering a peaceful sigh as she went to join the many loved ones that await her in heaven.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Richard Marshall, her grandson Ronald “Scotty” Scott, Jr., her parents, and her six siblings, Ruth Schaf, Glen Runnebohm, Paul Runnebohm, Thelma Kuhn, Ray Runnebohm, and Eddie Runnebohm. Kathryn is survived by her three daughters, Sheila Marshall, Sharon Scott, and Susan (Michael) Lee, six granddaughters, 18 great-grandchildren, and the “adopted” Toumey-Jester family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 10 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 4218 E. Michigan Road, Shelbyville, IN. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, with a rosary service at 10:40 am.
Interment will be at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St., in Shelbyville.
