Larry Eugene Ortel, 83, of Fairland, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.
He was born on March 1, 1943, in Greenfield, the son of Herman and Evelyn (Terhune) Ortel. On October 24, 1970, he married his wife of 56 years, Janice Sue Fisher, and she survives.
In addition to Janice, Larry is survived by his son, Chad Ortel of Shelbyville; daughter, Mandy Fleming of Zionsville; sister, Becky Wiley of Ingalls; grandchildren, Allyssa Steele and husband, Caleb, Owen Ortel, Seth Ortel and fiancee’, Kenzee, Claire Fleming and Sylvie Fleming; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Ortel; sister, Janet Pyle; and daughter-in-law, Crystal Ortel.
In 1961, Larry graduated from New Palestine High School. He received his associates degree from Purdue Extension.
Larry was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was a former deacon, member of the men’s club, and attended Bible study.
He was a United States Army veteran.
Larry worked as a data processor for Kroger, retiring with 36 years of service. He raised cattle, enjoyed horses, and farmed corn, soy beans and hay.
He enjoyed visiting National Parks. Larry was very fond of horses and enjoyed riding. Most of all, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities from band to sports. Larry was a fan of IU basketball, and loved watching their games.
Visitation will be from 10 am to Noon, Friday, October 9, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church, 6513 W 300 S, New Palestine, Indiana 46163. The Funeral service will follow at Noon, at the church, with Pastor Jason Taylor officiating.
Interment will follow at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
