Leonard L. Thomas, 89, of Shelbyville, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Walker Place in Shelbyville.
He was born on August 30, 1936, in Franklin, Kentucky, the son of Jess and Annie (Rippy) Thomas. On May 5, 1960, he married Virginia Ellen “Ginger” Barnett, and she preceded him in death on June 23, 2017.
Leonard is survived by his sons, Edward L. Thomas and wife, Joanie, of Edinburgh, James Leonard Thomas and wife, Pamela, of St. Paul, and Jeremy L. Thomas and wife, Allison, of Shelbyville; daughters, Patsy Ann Zobel of Fairland and Jennifer Gay Roberts and husband, Peter, of Indianapolis; sisters, Sue Brown and Shirley Davidson, both of Franklin, Kentucky; grandchildren, Daryl Thomas and wife, Diana, Morgan Brockman and husband, Aaron, Whitney Thomas, Benjamin Thomas and wife, Lynnette, Isaiah Thomas and wife, Kylee, Hannah Biller and husband, Kent, Alexis Zobel, Andrew Zobel and wife, Christina, Joseph Roberts and wife, Savannah, and Emily Roberts; great-grandchildren, Mia Thomas, Ezri Thomas, Giselle Thomas, Elena Thomas, Riley Brockman, Quinn Brockman, Jude Brockman, Arianna Thomas, Caroline Thomas, Luke Thomas, Brooklyn Thomas, Ruby Thomas, Eli Biller, Griff Biller, Hazel Biller and Easton Zobel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to Ginger, Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Thomas; and four siblings that passed during their childhood.
Leonard was a member of the Salmons General Baptist Church in Franklin, Kentucky.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Leonard was a truck driver for Wheeler Corporation for over 20 years, retiring in 2006.
He enjoyed watching westerns. Leonard also enjoyed sitting on his porch watching nature.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm, Monday, June 8, 2026, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral Services will be at 10 am, Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at the funeral home, with Pastor Aaron Brockman officiating.
Interment will be at Whispering Hope Memorial Gardens in Shelby County.
