Lois J. Cherry Slaton

Lois J. Cherry Slaton, 97, of Indianapolis passed away Monday, March 2, 2020 at Traditions at Solana in Indianapolis. She was born June 22, 1922, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Kenneth M. and Freda I. (Williams) Long. On April 27, 1944, she married Martin M. Cherry, and he preceded her in death on September 13, 1975. On February 19, 1981, she married James L. Slaton, and he passed away on April 10, 2002. Lois is survived by her children, Ann Baker and husband, Scott, of Carmel, and James K. Cherry and wife, Cheryl, of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Kyle Baker and wife, Teresa, Holly Baker Barker and husband, Jacob, Renae Cherry Buchanan and husband, Jeremy and Daniel Cherry; great-grandchildren, Elijah Baker, Rhett Buchanan and Reese Buchanan; two nieces; and one nephew. Lois was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Stephen M. Cherry; and brother, Byron R. Long. She graduated in 1940 from Shelbyville High School and attended Ball State Teachers College. Lois was a member of the First Christian Church in Shelbyville for over 70 years, a former active member of the Women’s Society. She played the piano and helped with Bible school for many years. Besides being an excellent cook and wonderful homemaker, Lois formerly worked at Nelson’s Photography Studio and Gift shop, later working as an assistant bookkeeper at Shelbyville Central Schools for 15 years before retiring. Lois was a past member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority and the Vestavia Club. She enjoyed playing the piano, painting ceramics, traveling and playing bingo. Lois was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. The family would like to express their thanks to her caregivers at Traditions at Solana. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Rev. Beth Crouch officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
