Lorene Kingery Harrell

Lorene Kingery Harrell, 93, of Franklin passed away Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community. She was born December 30, 1926, in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Lee Ander and Lovell (Parsley) Kingery. On December 9, 1945, she married her husband of 74 years, Wallace Harrell, and he survives. In addition to Wallace, Lorene is survived by her daughters, Barbara (B. J.) Fairchild-Newman of Indianapolis, and Joyce Shaffer and husband, Tom, of Walterboro, South Carolina; grandchildren, Andrew Shaffer, Lauren Shaffer McKinney, Pamela Fairchild-Clark and Joseph Fairchild; and four great-grandchildren, Heidi and Harrison Clark and Bryce and Ford McKinney. Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; son, Larry Harrell; brother, Fred Lewis Kingery; and sister, Myrtle Ree Dowell. She graduated from Emmanuel High School in Indianapolis and earned her beauty operator’s license shortly after graduation. Lorene was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin and was a member for many years at Fairland Methodist Church and Town and Country Christian Church in Shelbyville. She was a beautician for 35 years and began her career at William H. Blocks in Indianapolis. Lorene ran Lorene’s Beauty Shop out of her home in Fairland for most of her years as a stylist. She frequently talked about how much she missed her many clients after her retirement. Lorene took pride in her own appearance and seldom left the house without her hair and makeup looking their best. Her husband and daughters frequently heard compliments about what a pretty woman she was. Lorene and Wallace lived in Fairland 40 years, before moving to Shelbyville, and then on April 1, 2014, they moved to the Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community. She was always busy with her hands, making afghans and quilts. She was a member of the Bear Paw Quilters Club and looked forward to her meetings at the Grover Museum. Lorene and Wally were avid campers and as members of the Bears of the Blue River Camping Club, they traveled over much of the country by trailer and motorhomes. Lorene considered these retirement years traveling with Wally as a highlight of her life and often talked about their adventures on the road. Lorene was outspoken throughout her life, and everyone around her always knew exactly what she was thinking and what she thought friends and family should do to improve their lives. She was fond of saying, “I am going to say what I think.” She loved seeing her grandchildren and especially delighted in her great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. (There will be a limit of 50 people in the funeral home at any given time._ Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
