Mary “Jean” (Kerr) Thomas, 95, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, April 18, 2022, at Heritage House of Shelbyville. She was born April 28, 1926 to Delbert and Lucy (Bailey) Kerr in Decatur County. Jean married John Milton Thomas on December 24, 1946, and he preceded her in death on September 29, 2015. Jean is survived by her five children, Marsha Oakley and husband, William, of Baltimore, Melinda Hatchett of Avon, Melanie Thomas of Shelbyville, Michelle Karmire and husband, Jason, of Boggstown, and J. Mark Thomas and wife, Karen, of Seymour; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. In addition to John, Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, James D. Kerr. Jean graduated in 1944 from Fairland High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Jean was a devoted mother and wife. She enjoyed watching games shows, playing cards with friends, gardening and canning. Jean also enjoyed traveling. Private graveside services will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, 704 Morris Avenue in Shelbyville. Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176 or the Shelbyville-Shelby County Animal Shelter, 705 Hale Road, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
