Nora Mae Douglas

Nora Mae Douglas, 82, of Shelbyville passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020, at her home. She was born May 5, 1938, in Shelby County, the daughter of William Howard and Edna Mae (Fisher) Cobler. On September 14, 1956, she married her husband of 63 years, Billy Joe Douglas, and he survives. In addition to Bill, Nora is survived by her daughters, Ronda Bartlett and husband, Mike, of Westport, Rena Lee and husband, Bob, and Rita Meulen and husband, Ben, both of Shelbyville; twin sister, Nola Gilles of Flat Rock; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Elva Cobler; great-grandchildren, Jayden Smith and Elvis Wainscott Meulen; grandson-in-law, Josh Hampton; and brother-in-law, Joe Gilles. Nora graduated in 1956 from Clark Township High School. She was a member of Westport Christian Church. Nora formerly worked at the JC Store. She retired from Kroger, where she was the deli manager and decorated cakes, with 33 years of service. After retirement, she cooked at Southwestern Schools and Ashford Place Health Campus for five years. She and her sister, Nola, sold Elephant Ears at the Shelby County Fair for many years. Nora enjoyed many crafting projects including painting ceramics. She also enjoyed her many collectables. She made many various cakes for her family, including their graduations cakes, birthday cakes and all of her children and grandchildren’s wedding cakes. Nora also leaves behind her dog, Jolene. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2020, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at the funeral home, with Mike Bartlett officiating. Interment will be at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Johnson County.
