Richard C. Huber

Richard C. Huber, 98, of Shelbyville passed away Friday, June 5, 2020, at Ashford Place in Shelbyville. He was born March 14, 1922, in Fairland, the son of Ortis C. and Elnora (Arnold) Huber. On May 23, 1946, he married Betty Jean McGuire, and she preceded him in death on May 24, 2000. Richard is survived by his daughter, Nancy S. Scheffler and husband, John, of Columbus; sons, Richard C. Huber, Jr., and wife, Monica, of Carmel, Kenneth E. Huber of Monrovia, and Steven D. Huber of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Desiree Gaines, Scott Huber, Brett Huber, Matthew Huber, Zachary Huber, Brent Scheffler, Kelly Scheffler and Amy Barbieri; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to Betty, Richard was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; sisters, Aida Marie Shaw, Mary Jean Jones, Fern Hamilton, Carol L. Huber and an infant sister; brothers, Roland O. Huber and Robert Huber. Richard graduated in 1940 from Shelbyville High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, serving during World War II, from October 14, 1942 to December 30, 1945. Richard was in the 862nd Air Engineering Squad, where he was an airplane instrument mechanic. Richard retired twice, first from General Electric, and later from Wellman in 1994, where he was a set-up man for both companies. He was a member of the Eagles Aeries Lodge No. 766 and Shelbyville Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2695. Richard enjoyed playing horse shoes. He also enjoyed being a devoted Shelbyville Golden Bear fan. Richard played Euchre and Nickle Rummy at the Eagles Lodge. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2020 at London Cemetery in Shelby County.
