Ruth Long Carmony, 101, of Shelby County, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at University Heights Health and Living in Indianapolis.
She was born March 12, 1917, in Shelby County, the daughter of Walter Thurston and Lelah Ann (Talbert) Bass. On January 11, 1936, she married her husband of 59 years, Dwight E. Long, and he preceded her in death on January 14, 1995. She married Gerald C. Carmony, and he preceded her in death on February 26, 2007.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Gary Long and wife, Nancy, of Greenwood, Randy Long and wife, Jan, of Lake Tahoe, California, and Greg Long and wife, Tish, of Sebring, Florida; grandchildren, Brad Long, Mike Long, Scott Long, Trent Long, Brett Long, Wesley Long, Tracey Carish and Travis Long; 20 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Elizabeth Richardson, Dorothy Ross, Lois Batton and Mary Bolatto; and brother, Harold Bass.
Ruth graduated from Morristown High School in 1935.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville and attended Little Blue River Baptist Church.
Ruth was the secretary at Shelbyville Junior High School from 1957 until retiring in 1980.
She was also formerly a member of Junior Cotiery and United Methodist Women.
Ruth loved her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. Ruth had a very positive outlook on life, she could always find the good in people and she didn’t know a stranger.
Visitation will be from 10 am to noon Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Hanover Cemetery in Shelby County.
