Ruth M. Gaines

Ruth M. Gaines, 80, of Shelbyville passed away Friday, January 1, 2021, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville. She was born August 20, 1940, in Flat Rock, the daughter of Charles and Laura (Rowlett) Purtlebaugh. On January 12, 1959, she married her husband of 61 years, Clifford F. Gaines, and he survives. In addition to Clifford, Ruth is survived by her daughters, Lisa Gaines and fiance’, Roger Matney, and Sabrena Gaines, both of Shelbyville; son, Bret Gaines of Shelbyville; brothers, Ed Purtlebaugh and wife, Jan, of Indianapolis, Glenn Purtlebaugh and wife, Judy, of Shelbyville; sisters, Mary Come and husband, Joe, of Shelbyville, Betty Skidmore and husband, Larry, of Archdale, North Carolina, and Becky Heltsley and husband, Tony, of Texas; grandchildren, Halee Mathies and husband, Mitchell, Clifford Floyd and Courtney Floyd; great-grandchildren, Callen Floyd and Alice Floyd; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hazel Knight, Mildred Sosbe, Donna Kelsey, Janet Loughman and Norma Sosbe; and brothers, John Purtlebaugh, Aaron Avery Purtlebaugh and Alvin Purtlebaugh. She enjoyed sewing and making crafts. Ruth loved to travel. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and loved to take care of her family. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with Rev. Dr. Steve Bohall officiating. Interment will be at Flat Rock Cemetery in Flat Rock.
