Samuel Vanderploeg, 84, of Shelbyville, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his home.

He was born October 23, 1938, in Downey Precinct, California, the son of Samuel and Olive Maxine (Johnson) Vanderploeg.  On April 13, 1963, he married his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Jean “Betty” (Batkins) Vanderploeg, and she survives.

In addition to Betty, Sam is survived sister, Rosalie Heaton of Canada; brother, Mike Vanderploeg and wife, Debbie, of Boggstown; his extended family, Mark Mennonno and wife, Jackie, of Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Alex Mennonno and fiance’, Brianna, and Erika Mennonno, both of Indianapolis.  Sam leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved him so much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Judy VanHorn.

In 1956, Sam graduated from Union Township High School in Bargersville, and attended Purdue University.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Sam was a member of New Life United Methodist Church.

He was a farmer.  Sam was also formerly employed at Estes Design and Standard Food Stores.

Sam enjoyed walking farm fields to find Indian Relic Artifacts, going moose and deer hunting and sharing his garden vegetables. 

In 1982 and 1983, he served as a director for the Shelby County Beef Cattle Association.

He also leaves behind his beloved dog, BeBe.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the New Life United Methodist Church, 6145 NCR 400 W in Fairland.  The Celebration of Sam’s life will follow at 2 p.m.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Life United Methodist Church, Shelbyville-Shelby County Animal Shelter, 705 Hale Road, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 17th St., Columbus, Indiana 47401 or the donor’s choice of charity.
