Sherry Faye Benson, 76, of Waldron, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus.
She was born June 23, 1949, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Howard Earl “Red” and Edith (Crosby) Bettner. On April 22, 1972, she married her husband of 53 years, John C. “Jay” Benson, and he survives.
In addition to Jay, Sherry is survived by her mother, Edith Bettner of Waldron; son, Gregory J. Benson of Geneva; daughter, Katie Anne Crews and husband, Chad, of Noblesville; granddaughter, Jacey Crews; sister, Shirley Saddler of Marion; brothers, Gerald Bettner and wife, Linda, of Bloomington, Nelson Bettner and wife, Donna, of Boggstown, and Max Bettner and wife, Renita, of Columbus; brother-in-law, David Benson of Greensburg; sisters-in-law, Judy Kuhn and husband, Steve, and Joyce Lux and husband, Danny, both of Shelbyville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sherry was preceded in death by her father, Howard Bettner; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Betty (Yeager) Benson; brother-in-law, Michael Saddler; and sisters-in-law, Nancy (Bridge) Benson and Kathy (Hoop) Bettner.
In 1967, Sherry graduated from Waldron High School. After high school, she continued her education and became a cosmetologist. Forty-four days ago on December 31, 2025, Sherry retired from Waldron Nursing Home. She had been a beautician for 48 years.
Sherry was a devoted and very active member of the Geneva United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and directed the Angel Choir.
She was also a member of the Noble Township Extension Homemakers Club, where she was president for many years.
Sherry enjoyed antiques and going thrifting. She also enjoyed making craft items, tending to her gardens and traveling with friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the funeral home, with Pastor Kristen Hanson and Rev. Mark Dodd officiating.
Interment will be in Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Geneva United Methodist Church, 3107 E. Vandalia Road, Flat Rock, Indiana 47234.
