Victoria S. “Vicki” Bernard, 76, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2022, at her home.

She was born May 6, 1946, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Raymond F. Sr. and Helen A. (Stewart) Evans.  On May 1, 1965, she married her devoted husband of 57 years, Wendell Bernard, and he survives.

In addition to Wendell, Vicki is survived by her daughters, Barbara Ann Kenkel and husband, Daniel, of Shelbyville, and Suzi Bruin and husband, Bret, of Columbus; brother, Ray F. Evans, Jr., and wife, Sheila, of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Joshua Lee Kenkel, Matthew Nicholas Kenkel, Beau Christopher Kenkel, William Bernard Bruin and Brooke Christine Bruin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Daryl and Sharon Bernard of Shelbyville; sisters-in-law, Cheryl F. Clark of Flat Rock, and Pam Bernard of Shelbyville; nieces, Jodi Oliver and husband, Josh, and Whitney Evans; and nephews, Darin Bernard, Brady Bernard and wife, Tawana, and Raymond F. Evans III.

Vicki was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law, Ronnie Bernard and James Clark.

She graduated in 1964 from Shelbyville High School, and received her Bachelors of Science in education in 1976 from Indiana Central University.

For nine years, Vicki taught school at St. Joseph Catholic School, she also taught baton twirling lessons to the little girls.  Vicki served as Shelby County Recorder for eight years.  She and Wendell owned and operated Bernard Realty Inc. from August 31, 1982, until retiring on August 31, 2010.

Vicki enjoyed spending time with her family, neighbors and girlfriends.  She loved all animals and had a tender heart towards her family.

She was a devoted wife, daughter, mom, granny and everyone she ever met called her “friend”.

Vicki was a remarkably strong woman that battled Multiple Sclerosis for 42 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.  At 3:30 p.m. the rosary will be led by her grandson, Beau Kenkel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St. in Shelbyville, with Father Mike Keucher officiating.

Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.
