William G. “Pete” Swango, 86, of Shelbyville, passed away, Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis.

He was born May 27, 1937, in New Point, the son of Mose William and Olive (Blair) Swango.  On June 26, 1992, he married Ethleen (Gurley) Miller Swango, and she survives.

In addition to Ethleen, Pete is survived by his daughters, Serena Baker, Angela Hadley and Crystal Dettmering; sister, Eulagene Roszell; four grandsons; two granddaughters; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Pamela Clark; and sisters, Gladys Lee, Frances Madden, Caroline Swango, Vivian Sallee, Annie Colberson, Wilma Lou Sallee and Rosellen Swango.

In 1955, he graduated from Greensburg High School.

He retired in 2007, from American Lifts, with 38 years of service.

Pete was a member of the Eagles Aerie Lodge No. 766, where he served as a past president and trustee.  He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 70.  Pete was formerly a member of the Moose Lodge No. 2118.

Pete enjoyed playing poker, teasing and telling jokes.

A Gathering of Friends and Family will be from 1 to 4 pm, Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, 3718 E. Blue Ridge Road, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 90, Memphis, Tennessee 38101-9929.
